Drainage Solutions — Southern California
Yard Drainage Solutions in the Inland Empire, California
Water pooling by the foundation, a side yard that stays a swamp, a slope that washes out every winter — moved away and gone, with grading and pipe that actually carries the volume.
What This Covers
The work inside drainage solutions
-
Surface regrading
Re-cutting the soil so the ground falls away from the house at roughly two percent for the first several feet, which solves a surprising number of drainage complaints on its own.
-
French drains
A perforated pipe in a gravel trench wrapped in filter fabric, set below grade to collect water that has already soaked in and carry it to daylight or a dry well.
-
Catch basins and channel drains
Grated basins in low spots and linear channel drains across driveways and at garage doors, piped to a solid line that runs to an outlet.
-
Downspout collection
Roof downspouts tied into buried solid pipe so roof water is carried past the foundation instead of dumping beside it.
-
Dry wells and infiltration
Where there is no lower point to drain to, a gravel-filled or chambered dry well that holds runoff and lets it percolate on your own lot.
-
Slope stabilization
Planting, jute netting, rock and small check structures to stop a bank from rilling and depositing mud on the patio each storm.
How The Job Goes
From first call to done
- 01
Watch where the water goes
Ideally we see the problem during or right after rain. Otherwise we read the stains, the moss, the settled soil and the high-water marks, and shoot elevations to find the real low points and falls.
- 02
Find the outlet first
Every drain system needs somewhere legal and lower to send water — the street gutter, a rear swale, a dry well. The outlet decides the whole design, so it is settled before anything is dug.
- 03
Design the collection
Basins where water sits, a French drain where the ground stays saturated, channel drains at hard crossings, downspouts captured — sized so a hard inland downpour does not overwhelm the pipe.
- 04
Trench and set falls
DigAlert marked, trenches cut to a continuous downhill fall checked with a level, no bellies where water and silt can collect.
- 05
Pipe, gravel and fabric
Solid pipe on the conveyance runs, perforated pipe in gravel and filter fabric on the collection runs so soil cannot silt the system closed.
- 06
Backfill and restore
Trenches compacted in lifts, sod or mulch put back, basins set flush so a mower passes over them.
- 07
Test with water
We run a hose or wait for rain, confirm every inlet draws and the outlet flows, and adjust any grate height that is not catching.
What Decides The Price
Where a quote for this lands
Drainage cost is set almost entirely by how far the water has to travel to a legal outlet and how hard the ground is to trench. What moves it:
Distance to a usable outlet
A low point ten feet from the street gutter is cheap to solve. The same problem in a back corner with the only outlet a hundred feet away through a side yard is a long trench.
How much pipe and how many inlets
One basin and a short run is minor. A property that needs downspouts captured, two side yards drained and a channel drain at the garage is a system.
Soil and what is in the way
Clay digs slow. Roots, rock, an existing sprinkler mainline and shallow utilities all add time in the trench.
Regrade extent
Re-cutting the grade around one door is small. Reshaping a whole back yard that was left dead flat, including import or export of soil, is earthwork.
Dry well versus gravity outlet
If there is nowhere lower to drain to, a properly sized dry well or infiltration chamber is more material and excavation than a pipe to a gutter.

Signs You Need This
You’re probably here because
- Water stands against the foundation or under the house for days after rain
- One side yard is permanently muddy and smells musty
- The lawn has spongy low spots that never fully dry
- Downspouts dump right next to the slab and the soil there has sunk
- A slope in the yard leaves a fan of mud on the patio after every storm
- Efflorescence, staining or a damp line is showing on an interior wall
Across the Inland Empire
Clay soil and a year of rain in a few storms
The Inland Empire gets most of its ten inches in a handful of winter storms, so drainage here is sized for short, intense flow, not a drizzle. Expansive clay makes it worse two ways: it sheds water instead of absorbing it, so more runs off, and it swells against foundations and flatwork when it does get wet. Getting roof and surface water piped away from the house is direct protection for the slab and the hardscape. Where the lot cannot drain to a lower point, infiltration has to happen on site, and any connection to the public storm system or work in the right-of-way needs city sign-off. DigAlert is called before every trench.
Questions Homeowners Ask
Before you call
Is a French drain always the answer?
No, and it is over-used. A French drain collects water that is already in the soil. If your problem is surface water sheeting off a slope or a downspout, regrading and solid pipe fix it better and cheaper. Often the right system is a mix.
Where does the water actually go?
To the lowest legal outlet available — usually the street gutter, sometimes a rear swale or, where there is no gravity option, a dry well that lets it soak away on your property. We confirm the outlet before designing anything upstream.
Can you fix this without tearing up the whole yard?
Usually the trenching follows a few specific lines rather than the whole area, and sod or mulch goes back over it. A full regrade is more disruptive, but many problems are solved with targeted collection and piping.
Will drainage work stop water getting into my house?
Moving roof and surface water away from the foundation removes the most common cause. If water is already entering below grade, drainage is part of the fix alongside waterproofing, which is a separate trade.
